Works for me Wednesday – Kitchen edition…

I hate my kitchen. Really, really hate it. Which is a shame, since I love to cook so much. It has the ugliest wallpaper in the world (as far as I’m concerned – I’m sure the person who put it up really liked it). It has wheat on hit and is this offwhite/dirty-looking color. And the few times something has gotten on it and I’ve tried to scrub it clean? Well, did I mention it’s LINEN? Which is *not* scrubbable. And I have *four* kids?

But like the rest of the world, the kitchen is our hub. It’s where we enter/exit the house, it’s where all of the nourishment comes from (unless of course we order in – which only happens like 3 times a year since “ordering in” means we call Caseys and order pizza and Chip goes to pick it up). And of course, it’s the kids favorite room, because it *is* where the snacks are.

But there is one feature of my kitchen that I *love* – not because it organizes the kitchen, but really our entire lives some weeks. One one wall of my kitchen, I have this HUGE whiteboard. 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet-ish. (I’m so not going to measure – the last time I broke out the tape measure, I *cut* my finger y’all! With a tape measure!). I’m telling y’all now, if you decide to go the white board route, just buy the big one. I think I had three of them in varying sizes before we landed on the one we have now.

The white board is “message central” – it holds out menu for the week. It’s where all phone messages are written, so it’s usually scattered with phone numbers. It has a grocery list. It has a Target list. It usually has doodles by one or more of the fam. Or friends who come over. It’s where we leave instructions for babysitters and list important dates coming up.

It’s not the prettiest thing in the world to hang on the wall (better than the wallpaper it hangs over though), but it was the *best* tool It hangs in the kitchen because that’s where we spend so much of our time.

What keeps you organized in the kitchen?

  1. You mean we’re supposed to be organized?? Kidding. Actually, it’s a small thing for me…I bought a grocery pad at Target the other day that is on my fridge. I check off items when we run out–this is especially helpful for the items that I don’t use everyday (like almond extract) but when I need them, I NEED them.

  2. We use a large white board too, but not as much as you do. I used to use it for homeschooling, but we’ve outgrown it for that. You’ve given me some new ideas for it. Thanks!
